Fitness is FUN!

Students have been working hard to prepare for the upcoming Turkey Trot on November 26th.  Last week students participated in "boot camp" stations as we celebrated Veteran's Day.  This week we will begin fitness testing (Fitnessgram) for grades 3-5 and fitness activities for grades k-2.  Hopefully students realize, Fitness CAN BE FUN!

Strike!

Students have been getting active by striking!

The 3rd-5th grade students have been playing baseball type games invented by Cal Ripken, Jr. called Quickball.  When Cal retired from baseball he went into the elementary schools in the Baltimore area and realized baseball was not being taught because of the amount of time students have to stand around.  He invented games where batting skills are needed and students move in a fast paced atmosphere.

Kindergarten through 2nd grades have been focusing on striking balloons in a tennis style.  They carry the balloons by the "piggy tails" and "baby bop" them!  This week students worked on individual skills and next week they will be working in pairs to hit the balloon cooperatively and competitively.

Gymnastics Stations

This week in PE all students are participating in gymnastic stations.  The past three weeks we have focused on balancing, rolling, traveling with weight on hands and jumping and landing with trampolines.  Each station has a menu of choices for students to complete.

Students are rolling, seal walking and jumping at their stations.

Gymnastics!

All students are currently participating in the educational gymnastics unit.  Last week students worked on rolling.  The rolls they practiced include: log, pencil, egg, stick, ninja and the forward roll.

This week we are adding jumping and landing.  Students are in mat groups with trampolines.  We are working on two feet take-offs and two feet landings.  This week we are also focusing on Gabby Douglas (the first African American gymnast to win a gold medal in the All-Around competition).  Students are watching a clip on the sacrifices her family made during her Olympic training.  Students will also see video clips of her performances.
